Scientists gave a group of old mice a weekly shot of semaglutide, the drug in Ozempic and Wegovy. The ones who got it lived about 100 days longer than the ones who didn’t. Somewhere, a lot of humans already taking that same drug for weight loss just felt very smug.
Hold the victory lap. This is a genuinely interesting study. It is not permission to treat a GLP-1 prescription as your anti-aging plan.
Here’s why it’s worth your attention anyway. We’ve spent the last year hearing two contradictory things about GLP-1 drugs: they’ll finally shift the weight that’s outlasted every diet since your forties, and they might quietly take your muscle mass with it.
This study is the first real data suggesting the drug class might be doing something more interesting than either of those two stories.
The study, funded by the National Institute on Aging and published September 2 in Nature, gave semaglutide to 20-month-old female mice (late-life, in mouse terms) for the rest of their lives. The treated group lived roughly 100 days longer on average than the untreated group.
It wasn’t just extra time. Treated mice kept more muscle and sharper cognitive function, showed less inflammation, and, at the gene-expression level, regained some regenerative capacity that old tissue normally loses. That’s a bigger finding to wave off than one number on a survival curve.
Compare that to calorie restriction, the other longevity lever with real evidence behind it. The semaglutide mice beat the calorie-restricted mice on exploratory behavior, spatial memory, and blood sugar control.
They also kept a normal metabolic rate, while the calorie-restricted mice’s metabolism slowed down. Study lead Danica Chen, of UC Berkeley, told the university’s own science writers the drug may be “tapping into a biological pathway independent of calorie restriction.”
Confidence level: medium. Federal funding and a peer-reviewed Nature paper are about as solid as sourcing gets. But this is a single-sex, animal-only study, and the researchers say so themselves: don’t expect the same result in a person, at least not yet.
The researchers’ own caveat is blunt: there’s “no indication” a person would see anything like this from the same drug, and no human trial has tested it.
That caveat matters more here than in most study writeups, because this audience already has real reasons to be cautious about GLP-1s. A recent survey of longevity experts found more than three-quarters flag accelerated muscle loss as a serious risk for anyone on a GLP-1 who isn’t also doing resistance training.
The Real Learning (that everyone will miss)
Put the two findings next to each other, and the takeaway here isn’t about mice at all. The mice that did well weren’t just given a drug. A lab controlled everything else about their food, their environment, and their exercise.
Nobody is controlling yours. If you want any version of what this study describes, a body that ages with more muscle instead of less, the resistance training is the part you have to supply yourself, drug or no drug.
The mice didn’t get a choice about their treadmill. You still do.
