If you’re wondering, why isn’t everything checked out thoroughly, well, it’s simply not their job to do that before the supplements are sold.

Companies don’t have to prove to the FDA their magic potions are safe before stocking them on store shelves. What the FDA does insist on, though, is some basic labeling etiquette:

  • The product’s name
  • A line that says, “Yep, it’s a dietary supplement”
  • The fine print on the maker’s details like where they hang their hat

The FDA keeps an eye out to make sure these little pills aren’t sneaky impostors or mislabeled. Understanding these rules helps you make smarter choices about the bottle you’re picking up.

Third-Party Testing

Now, since the FDA has its limits, this is where third-party testers swoop in. They give you another layer of assurance about your supplements by checking if what’s in the bottle matches what’s on the label.
